Rod Smith, a Wuikineuxv (Oweekeno) artist born in Vancouver BC in 1966, creates work of remarkable precision and elegance. Trained by his father, the late Harris Smith (Lalkawilas), Rod signs his pieces Thaelkualis—"He who feasts the people from morning until next morning." Working primarily in basswood, red and yellow cedar, arbutus, and maple, he crafts sculptures, masks, poles, paintings, plates, vessels, bowls, and bentwood boxes that reflect deep cultural knowledge and masterful technique. This small seal head sculpture measures 4.5" L x 3" W x 5.5" H, making it an intimate addition to any collection or home.
