About Us

Who we are

Rooted in Tradition. Guided by Legacy. Inspiring the Future.

Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI), a private nonprofit, was born from a vision to honor, preserve, and celebrate the vibrant cultures of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. For thousands of years, our ancestors lived in harmony with the land, passing down stories, art, and traditions that define who we are today.

What we do

Founded in 1980

Founded in 1980, SHI continues this legacy by championing cultural education, supporting Native artists, and safeguarding our languages and history for future generations. Through exhibits, art programs, educational programs, language revitalization, and public events, we share the richness of Alaska Native heritage with the world while empowering our communities to thrive.

Join us!

At SHI, every step we take is guided by the wisdom of our ancestors and the values they instilled: respect for nature, reverence for our elders, and the importance of holding each other up. Together, we bridge the past, present, and future, ensuring that the stories and knowledge of our people live on.
