Dennis Pungowiyi, a Siberian Yupik artist from the Qiwaghmilt Clan, is highly regarded for his skillful ivory carvings that reflect the cultural traditions of St. Lawrence Island. Growing up in Nome, Alaska, he developed a passion for carving at a young age, influenced by time spent in Savoonga, where he learned from experienced artisans.

His work primarily features marine animals such as walruses, seals, and fish, intricately crafted from walrus ivory and often accented with baleen or whale bone. His carving style carries the legacy of St. Lawrence Island’s master artists, blending precision with cultural storytelling.

Committed to preserving Indigenous art, Dennis continues to create and share his work.  His carvings are sought after for their authenticity, craftsmanship, and deep connection to Siberian Yupik heritage, making them valued pieces in galleries and private collections.
